On 14 July 2008 Algeria launched the highly anticipated Seventh International Exploration and Production Licensing Round. Pre-qualified candidates are invited to bid for acreage across 16 zones containing 45 blocks covering an area of 143,257 square kilometres. The zones are distributed throughout sedimentary basins across the country said to be offering high potential.
The deadline for bids is 3 December 2008 at 09:00 hours GMT. Contract signing is expected on the 17 December 2008. Pre-qualified companies can bid as either an operator or an investor.
There will be a general presentation to interested companies on the 26 July 2008 in Algiers. Data rooms will then be available in two sessions 2 – 13 August 2008 and 1 – 15 October 2008.
The details of pre-qualified companies have not been revealed.

This is the first licensing round since April 2005 and has been long-awaited in the industry. It is also the first licensing round to take place under the new hydrocarbon law that gives Sonatrach a minimum of 51% in every contract awarded to a foreign player and the first run by the regulatory authority, Alnaft.
