Producers’ dilemma II: Managing development in a world of scarcity

Alberta’s oil sands industry is currently going through a period of significant change.  As conventional oil discoveries become increasingly rare, producers are shifting their attention to oil sands development.

In June, we introduced you to the Producers' Dilemma tool that our Canadian practice developed.  Using a game theory-based pilot simulation, they helped producers analyse complex market scenarios.

Now with Producers’ dilemma II: Managing development in a world of scarcity, our Canadian colleagues have expanded the game theory model to include the direct participation of both industry and government.

We are delighted to announce the addition of Guyana to our South America dataset.  The dataset includes all standard data layers such as wells and licences.  The cultural data layer (basin outlines, bathymetry, coastline, cities, roads, provinces, rivers) is also provided.

The PetroView South America dataset is available for the MapInfo and ArcView (ESRI) GIS platforms.  The Guyana release forms part of our continued data coverage expansion in South America.

Brazil 10th Licensing Round

On 18 September 2008, Brazil's hydrocarbons regulator, Agência Nacional do Petróleo (ANP), offered 130 onshore blocks in the 10th Licensing Round covering 70,370 square kilometres in seven basins: Sergipe-Alagoas, Amazonas, Parana, Potiguar, Parecis, Reconcavo and Sao Francisco.  The Round is scheduled to be completed by 18 December 2008.

162 exploratory blocks were originally offered under the 10th Licensing Round on 18 September 2008.  However, 32 blocks located in the Araripe, Pernambuco-Paraíba and Paraná basins were withdrawn due to technical and environmental reasons.

Under the indicative schedule, companies interested in participating in the 10th Round must submit all documents required for qualification by 14 November 2008, and participation fees and warranties by 15 December 2008.  The tender protocol, data package and further details can be obtained from: www.brasil-rounds.gov.br/index_e.asp.

A layer showing the blocks on offer, called BLOCKS_OFFER_R10, is included in the October release of PetroView South America and is accessible through the catalogue.

Doing Business in Angola

Date: Thursday 4 December 2008
Venue: The Deloitte Academy, 1 Stonecutter Street, London EC4A 4TR

Angola has been the rising star in the global oil and gas business, both in terms of new discoveries and oil production for the past 15 years.  The cycle of exploration, development and production has continued unabated over this time and briefly made Angola the premier African oil producer earlier this year.

With over 30 undeveloped discoveries in the deepwater and the possible sub-surface similarities with the new plays emerging in Brazil’s sub-salt zone, together with the upcoming licensing round, Angola is poised to become the pre-eminent oil producer in Africa.

With this in mind, we invite you to attend our seminar during which we will discuss key issues relating to participating in this challenging and exciting oil and gas sector.
