New Brazil Round 8

The eighth licensing round in Brazil took place on November 29th. Of the 284 blocks originally available, only 58 were offered because the number of blocks a company could purchase was limited following a Federal injunction from a judge in Brasilia (Federal Capital).

The 38 blocks awarded before the suspension would remain valid according to ANP (Brazil’s National Petroleum Agency).

Highlights of the round included blocks in the deepwater portion of the Santos basin attracting existing operators in Brazil such as Repsol, ENI, Hydro, as well as two newcomers; India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) and Woodside.

Another newcomer, Ecopetrol in partnership with Petrobras, also awarded an on-shore block in the Tucano basin.

The new blocks with coordinates will be available in the PetroView South America and Brazil January updates.

Our point of view discusses why oil and gas companies must look through a lens of opportunity when considering alternative sources of transportation fuel. To view this report, please visit our website.
